Students have to have passed their ISTD intermediate modern in order to take their Advanced 1 modern exam. Following on from Intermediate, the Advanced syllabus provides a base for continued professional progression. Advanced 1 modern is a vocational exam, the second in a series of professional level exams which are the minimum requirement for entry to vocational dance school. A pass at ISTD Advanced 1 level also carries UCAS points and can be counted towards university and higher education applications.
Advanced 1 modern demands a secure technique, increased core stability, weight placement, clean and strong lines, and also continuing to nurture the students musical awareness. Modern Theatre dance originated in America before travelling to the rest of the world. It is often seen on the stages of musical productions and is known for its theatrical qualities. The style uses travelling steps, high energy kicks, leaps and turns which all need strength and flexibility. For Advanced 1 ISTD Modern and Tap, candidates should wear a black leotard with black stirrup leggings.
